G.M.B.A. has a history of many successes, in recent years and in the past, at the highest levels in BC Minor Baseball. We take pride in fielding very competitive teams and we strive to keep this tradition of excellence going year after year. The official summer program for Mosquito, Peewee, Bantam and Midget divisions commences in early July and can go until early August (if the teams qualify for the Provincial Championships).
Being on a summer league team is a serious commitment. Players can expect to play games and have practices 4 to 5 days/week. Our teams travel into the Lower Mainland and families are to take full responsibility for transportation and all associated costs. If players are involved in summer soccer, hockey or other activities which may conflict , the player may not be eligible for team selection. The expectation is that players are available for as many games and practices as possible so that we may develop our teams as cohesive units. Bottom line, a serious commitment is expected from coaches, players AND parents.
Costs Involved
Costs associated with a full summer season for the 5-6 week season will vary from team to team, family to family. There is a $150.00 registration fee to begin with, refundable uniform deposit, the possibility of 6 trips into the Lower Mainland and the likelihood of two tournaments where there may be overnight stays required (including Provincials). We make every effort to car-pool and this is most helpful in terms of reducing expenses and making team logistics easier. Families can save costs by preparing picnic lunches for the road trips. We find these to be fun, far more healthy and convenient than going to restaurants. Depending on the location of tournaments families can reduce costs by staying with relatives. We at G.M.B.A. promote fund-raising and teams have been very successful in raising significant funds to offset the costs. Our policy is to support all G.M.B.A. players if they wish to play summer league and if they meet the tryout criteria below.
Try Out Process
If interested in trying out for summer league, players will receive information in the middle of May regarding the dates, times and field locations for tryouts. Generally we have three official tryouts and all interested players must attend. A player’s attitude, behaviour and performance through the regular season can have a bearing on team selection. The key requirements of a player is his/her positive and sincere attitude toward baseball, exemplary sportsmanship qualities and believing in the concept of “team”. Often three tryouts can’t give us that sense so we are always watching to see how a player conducts himself/herself through the course of the regular season. Ultimately, however, a strong or weak performance at tryouts can mean the difference from being selected or not.
Who May Try Out?
All eligible Mosquito, Peewee, Bantam and Midget players from G.M.B.A. and Sechelt(C.B.L.) may try out. B.C.M.B.A. rules allow a maximum of 3 players from a neighbouring association (C.B.L.) to be selected for an all star team. This concept has been endorsed by our G.M.B.A. executive. We welcome and encourage all players from both associations to participate in the try put process. However, if two players ( one G.M.B.A., one C.B.L.) are deemed equal in ability, the G.M.B.A. player will be selected over the C.B.L. player.
